An entirely new crew of Muppets are going to be boozing it up on "Late Night Liars", which is a new TV show that is reported to be a strange kind of mix between "The Muppet Show", "To Tell the Truth" and "Hollywood Squares". The show looks a little weird, so I am not quite sure if it will be a rousing success or not.
"Late Night Liars" is a game show with the drunk and possibly disorderly Muppets slated to be the "Liars" on the show. (Hopefully none of the Muppets will be harmed during the taping). Human contestants will have the strange task of assessing which of the Muppets is lying and which of the Muppets is telling the truth, definitely an unusual concept. As anyone who has ever seen a Muppet movie knows, most Muppets are fairly adept at lying.
Henson Alternatives, which is the adult part of the Jim Henson empire, is producing the show. As a long time fan of Jim Henson, I have to wonder if Jim Henson is turning over in his grave just ever so slightly at the notion of "Late Night Liars". Comedian Larry Miller is going to host the show with a Muppet rodent side-kick because every game show really needs a drunk rodent side-kick to keep the audience entertained.
That said, if you consider yourself an astute judge of Muppets and their lying ways, you might just want to watch "Late Night Liars" at least one time to give it a chance. The show is set to premiere on June 10th on GSN. Feel free to make a note of it on your calendars and "Save the Date" because I don't think this show will ever air on Hulu. I am also doubtful as to whether or not this particular show will have the staying power of either "The Muppet Show" or "Fraggle Rock", so there might not be that many episodes to watch.
As for those of you unsure about how Muppets drinking will affect the kids and any "Focus on the Family" fans out there, I urge you to consider just how many Muppets on the Muppet show in the 1970's were probably stoned. Also, if you take a good look at Miss Piggy, it is pretty obvious that she occasionally hits the sauce herself. Unfortunately, not every Muppet can be a tee-totaler like Kermit the Frog.
