Justin Beiber is everywhere I look and I really have no idea how this Canadian became such a sensation.
Last Saturday, he was on SNL live as possibly the youngest performer to hit the stage since the days of Menudo. He was in an SNL “Hot for Student” skit with Tina Fey hot for the young star in her classroom. I can’t say if the skit was better or worse than the “Van Halen’s’” “Hot for Teacher” music video back in the day, but I'm thinking that the original edges out Tina Fey's version, but only slightly.

Appropos of nothing, is Tina Fey more of a “Cougar” or a “Puma”? Demi Moore recently claimed to be a Puma, finding the term “Cougar” too negative, but is it really better to share the name with sporting equipment? Due to the fact that Puma is a pretty popular brand name, I’m sticking with Cougar as the better sounding term.
Aside from the reference to the fact that more and more female teachers are following the footsteps of their male counterparts by falling for their younger students, Justin Bieber’s performance was exactly what you would expect from someone who is 13-years-old, is obsessed with his hair and appearance already at such a tender young age, and who is no better or worse looking than a lot of androgynous-looking young teens out there.
If you had the extreme misfortune of watching the performance live or delayed for west coast time, itreminded me of Menudo or recent K-Pop or J-pop artists, both popular with the 13-14 year-old-girl set.
Translation: the performance I watched contained a routine that was heavy on a simple dance routine that could (and probably will) be emulated in middle school talent shows across the country (think “Napoleon Dynamite”) and light on meaningful music- nothing that I wouldn’t have anticipated.
That doesn’t mean I don’t like Justin Bieber or that I harbor any deep resentment against the kid, but I am happy that he has problems I can relate to. Apparently, he doesn’t like the pictures from his last photo spread in People Magazine, which I can totally relate to. I hate it when that happens. The photographer actually had the audacity to take pictures when he was laughing, but luckily the young lad has a sense of humor about himself and took the news in stride.
