Marky Mark is complaining that he was asked inappropriate questions during an interview, including questions about his sex life and about how he would have single-handedly fought the terrorists on (one of) the planes that hit the Twin Towers.

Um, hello, but did or did not Marky Mark play a porn star in “Boogie Nights?” Didn’t that role set the standards for the reporters to be able to ask him “inappropriate” questions during his interview? How long has Mr. Marky Mark been the king of the religious right? Isn’t Marky Mark a celebrity, which puts him in the public spotlight much more so than us ordinary individuals?

Don’t reporters have a right to judge celebrities for what they say and do?

I’m sorry, but Marky Mark is sounding a lot more like Sarah Palin or Newt Gingrich and a lot less like the star of “New Kids on the Block” that I grew up making fun of before I came to admire him for his acting abilities. Politicians and celebrities alike need to understand that they don’t have as much control over the press as they would like to. It’s not that the public has a right to know the details of a celebrity’s life, but that the press has a right to ask.

It’s called the first amendment. Look it up.

I understand the desire for a right to privacy, but Marky Mark has a net worth of $150 million. I have little sympathy for Marky Mark getting asked “inappropriate” questions during an interview. If he wanted to protect his privacy, maybe he shouldn’t take up to $15 million per film by producers who “force” poor Marky to publicize his movies.

It’s hard to sympathize with someone whose worst problem seems to be an “inappropriate question” or two when the economy is in shambles and close to 10% of the population is looking for work.

Reporters will ask questions. On occasion, they will go off script. It’s part of what makes the news interesting. Imagine if every interview went the same:

Reporter: How did you feel about working with _______________________ on the movie?

Typical Celebrity: ______________________ was an amazing person to work with.

Reporter: Did you enjoy._________________________?

Typical Celebrity: blah, blah, blah. I can’t answer that question.

As a writer, I know that some of my most popular posts are the most unusual or the ones that don’t follow the most predictable pattern. I imagine that successful interviews are the same.
