Watched the Oscars last night with some enjoyment- it’s not quite the spectacle the Grammy’s are, but it’s definitely worth watching.
The first thing that popped out at me was Ben Stiller’s Avatar costume- one word and one word only- ridiculous. I have to agree with him- he said it seemed like a better idea in rehearsal- good idea, but let's keep the “role play” costumes in the bedroom where they belong. I do have to admit that his Na'vi language-speaking ability was pleasantly surprising to my ears, and I am confident that any young nubile Na'vis in the audience would have been pleased to hear him.
The next thing that seems a bit apropos of nothing, but does relate in a loose way to the Oscars is: am I the only one who thinks that District 9 is half Starship Troopers and half the episode in Battlestar Galactica where the cylon reporter captures the crew on film? Just saying.....
And, although I didn’t see Precious and consequently, did not see Monique in Precious, I was happy to see her win. (Although it was weird that she brought a body-guard to the Oscar's.) Not the average looking (or acting) Oscar winner by far.
OK, this is going to hurt some people’s feelings because I know that Sarah Jessica Parker is everybody’s favorite darling (even if she is too thin), but was I alone in thinking that her costume was strikingly like the Statue of Liberty? I kept waiting for her to raise her arm in the right pose, but they must have warned her about that in rehearsal or something because I didn’t see it.
Of all the movie clips, the horror montage was the absolute best. What could be better than 50 years of horror movie clips all mashed together? Nice....
OK, I know everybody talked about J-Lo’s dress, so I am going to focus on something else- her hair looked like an absolute rat’s nest. (I myself am not so art-ful with my hair, but this is the Oscar’s)!
And, watching Jeff Bridges give his speech was just like watching “The Big Lebowski” (without Donny and Walter) all over again, MAN! How stoned was he and why can’t more actors/actresses be that relaxed on stage?
And, how was it that Sandra Bullock won an Academy Ward when she was in the same category as Meryl Streep? Don’t get me wrong- I like Sandra Bullock-, but come on, she is the heroine in “Speed” and “The Net” and is usually liked for her cuteness, not her acting ability.
As for the debate over “Hurt Locker” and “Avatar” and the whole best picture fiasco, nobody ever agrees on which film is the best, and honestly, was “Avatar” anything more than its special-effects?
