Corey Haim’s death might be linked to what People Magazine is calling a “Crime Ring” of people writing prescriptions illegally on stolen “prescription pads”. The details are still a little foggy and investigators don’t know yet if Corey Haim knew about the scheme or not. However, the authorities have confirmed that a prescription was written for him on a stolen pad.
A drug ring involving stolen prescription pads doesn’t sound so insidious, but obviously this turned out deadly. And I do have to wonder why it’s necessary to steal the prescription pads in the first place. As you have probably guessed already, I am not a mastermind criminal, but would prescription pads really be that hard to counterfeit? There are no special seals on them, no chips hidden within the prescription pads, and no hidden fibers- all of the prescriptions I’ve received in my lifetime looked like nothing more than personal stationery.
Corey Haim’s also not the first celebrity to have (possibly) overdosed on prescription medications -Anna Nicole Smith’s story sounds a little similar to me. The main difference between those two cases was that her doctors and attorneys were actually writing and filling the prescriptions for her- perhaps even hoping for some benefits from her being out of it or dead.
