Erykah Badu was given what is called a “disorderly conduct citation” down south in Texas for her strip-tease performance for her music video, Window Seat, last week. Apparently, the pedestrians (and the law) were less than thrilled to see the bodacious Ms. Badu strolling around in the buff and one even shouted at her to put her clothes back on. Fortunately for the singer, neither Texas Walker Ranger, nor George W. Bush was anywhere to be seen, so it doesn’t look like the charges are too serious and I doubt that she will end up behind bars.
I don’t have any problem at all with her nudity, and probably would not have ticketed her for that, but was irked by Erykah Badu ending the video in the manner she did: was it really necessary to end the video with Erykah getting shot on the exact same grassy knoll where JKF was assassinated?
I don’t think so. The video directors see otherwise, however, and claim that, “She’s evolving.........so it’s almost like you have to kill off the other person to do that.”
Say what? I feel pretty evolved, but have never once been even tempted in the slightest to be assassinated, even for the cause of advancing science or the evolution of the human species.
For a long, rambling complicated explanation which makes absolutely no sense, check out the directors interview with M-TV. Chike makes an overly-generalized comparison to people trying to assassinate the characters of do-gooders, such as Erykah Badu herself, which does little to explain why they chose to film her being shot on the grassy knoll. He further goes on to explain that Kennedy was shot for doing good things.
None of the explanation makes sense- I understand that “character assassination” can be symbolized by an actual assassination, but does shooting Erykah Badu buck-naked really display evolution and character assassinations or is it just a way for her to show off her more hidden charms?
Of course, if the slightly weird Parker Posey could appear dressed like Jackie O. on the day of the assassination in “The House of Yes”, I suppose it’s safe to say that a precedent has already been set for over the top tackiness when emulating the Kennedys and the assassination of JFK.
